They wanted someone to challenge them, and they were disappointed when I responded that no, their hat was their business. Because there is a powerful movement or shift going on in the broad left, where a certain base is moving away from more classic liberal and moderate progressive positions and adopting identitarian-focused activist ideology and more radical leftist (even Marxist/neo-Marxist) positions. So, she checks off a lot of the attributes that such leftists like – a Person of Color/ethnic, a woman, “speaks truth to power” (or, stands up strongly against evil republicans), green politics, tax the rich, open borders, etc. Her political positions and even the language she employs is simply a reflection of a certain zeitgeist. And these positions she takes up don’t even have to represent valid or sound policy. They just play well in social media.
I see a lot of MAGA or Trump hats and shirts, because I live in rural southeast Louisiana, in the white end of the parish. Trump has more support here than he does most other places, yet people clearly wear the hats for the benefits of those of us who oppose him. More than once I’ve fallen into a kind of trance as I stared at someone’s red hat and wondered just why they were so enthusiastic about a man who appears to be a senile moron, and more than once the person under the hat has caught me staring and proudly asked me if I had a problem it. Yes, I was looking at the damn hat, but I wasn’t ogling it or making a point of looking at it; it was just an accident, but it seemed to be the exact reaction that the wearer was looking for.
This is more of a statement statement than a fashion statement, though it does scream that the wearer doesn’t care half as much about their look as they do provoking strangers, but it was the first thing that came to mind when I read the question. Trump is a divisive figure, even if his supporters would agree to that. In fact his ability to piss people off, and his unabashed acknowledgments that he has no interest in serving those Americans who didn’t vote for him, seem to have his fans particularly excited. He is a president who won an election in spite of getting the smaller share of the votes, in a contest with record low turnout, so the best estimates put his actual support at somewhere around 20 percent of all Americans. Those people are vocal in their support, but there’s not a whole lot of people who are indifferent to Trump. Most of those who do not support him despise him instead, so walking around in a MAGA hat is a bit like flipping off 3/4 of the people you encounter.
