I grew up in the slums of a Rust Belt city, a common reality for many blacks in America. Luckily for me, I grew up with two loving parents who cared about my upbringing, especially my father, something that cannot be said for many black dads in America. They made sure I prioritized my academics and social development. first, and entailed a love of self-improvement and professional development in me. A great example of this was when my dad took me suit shopping before my first homecoming dance at a local secondhand store, and meticulously went through each brand and detail of my wardrobe, explaining how every aspect of a suit sends a signal, obsessing over the value of Jos.A Bank vs. Hugo Boss. Additionally, both my parents made an effort to learn my school material so they could help me with my homework. Not bad for a high school janitor and a stay-at-home mom who did house cleaning on the side.

What most commonly propagated as African cultural dress is the dashiki. The dashiki isn’t really the culturaltraditional dress of anyone, it’s literally a t-shirt, stylised to fit looser than a cotton tee and made with African printed or dyed fabrics. These tend to be stiffer and not stretchy, and do not breathe well, hence the loose fit. Variations on the collar is putting your own twist on it as you usually get these custom from a tailor. The dashiki is technically a t-shirt by any other name. So absolutely no offense.
