The three were replaced at various points by Harry Morgan as Col. Sherman Potter (the new C.O.), David Ogden Stiers as Major Charles Emerson Winchester III (the new X.O.), and Mike Farrell as Capt. B.J. Hunnicutt (another surgeon). Again, it’s interesting to note all three of these actors lasted longer in the series than the actors they replaced. These actors were in addition to the regulars who stayed for virtually the entire series run: Alan Alda as Capt. “Hawkeye” Pierce (a surgeon), Loretta Swit as Major Margaret Houlihan (the head nurse), William Christopher as Lt. Francis Mulcahy (the chaplain), Gary Burghoff as Cpl. Walter “Radar” O’Reilly (the company clerk), and Jamie Farr as Cpl. Maxwell Klinger (a corpsman and later, the company clerk).
For those too young to remember, M*A*S*H was a sitcom following a team of doctors and support staff stationed at the 4077th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital in Uijeongbu, South Korea, during the Korean War. The show ran on CBS from 1972 to 1983 — which is interesting, because the Korean War lasted less than four years, from 1950 to 1953. The show picked up where the 1970 feature film M*A*S*H left off. Episodes are still frequently shown today in syndication on stations around the United States. The show is a sitcom, but is probably better described as a black comedy, or a “dramedy” — because although the writers and actors were trying to show comic situations and stories, the show frequently tended to portray serious and dark subjects. After all, this is the Army, and they were at war. Soldiers came into and left the hospital in every episode — and many died. The first few seasons of M*A*S*H saw the writers and actors concentrating more on the comic side of Army life. There were exceptions, but comedy was the main focus. The first few seasons featured McLean Stevenson as Lt. Col. Henry Blake (the commanding officer), Larry Linville as Major Frank Burns (the executive officer), and Wayne Rogers as Capt. “Trapper” John McIntyre (a surgeon). All three left for various reasons midway through the show’s run before M*A*S*H ended.
The production and writing staff also changed as M*A*S*H moved along. As the series progressed (right around the period where the new actors replaced the old ones midway through the saga), it made a significant shift from being primarily a comedy with dramatic undertones to a drama with comedic undertones. The show also got less political and concentrated more on character-driven plotlines for each episode. Using comedy as a cover, M*A*S*H questioned, wrestled with, and mocked a lot of American values — especially when it came to war. Eventually however, the writers and actors ran out of steam and they simply struggled to find good story ideas for the later episodes.
