Your question alone is evident that ‘culture’ has a different meaning for some that may or may not describe African Americans in general. Often, outside of our community our cultural richness is over shadowed by the stereotypes highlighted in the media or by what people gleen from the news, our protests against injustices, sexually provocative music videos, drugs and violence. Of course every group around the globe can report similar factions, behaviors, attitudes and reactions especially in oppressed communities. Here are some of the particularly unique cultural attributes in the African American communities that are often takened for granted, sometimes even by our own, and what you don’t see reported or highlighted in the news;
This is the short list. If you are surprised, perhaps you have brought into the stereotypes that we’re all under privileged, poor and poor is relative, on food stamps, totally drugged out; thuggish, gang bangers called the mofia, drug lords, etc., in other communities, violent, ghetto under educated, angry, etc. True, a portion of the African American community, as found in other non-African American families, oppressed or controlled communities, must meet these challenges as well. Then Chuck, Goose and Uche saw a news interview of a black couple on TV. The couple told the reporter how they need to make the police look like the people that they’re serving. The couple flat out told the reporter that this is the problem with the police and you can’t have white police in black neighborhoods. You need black people that look like them to police black neighborhoods. Well…between what happened to Uche and what Chuck shared on what happened to him, now they all think blacks in America are racists. Uche and Goose can’t wait to go back home to their countries, and Chuck is retiring in South Africa. I don’t want them to go, but they told me there’s too much racism here in the US.
