They don’t save money. Kids still need to have a wardrobe of other clothes for weekends and holidays. For those that qualify for government assistance, they simply become something that needs to be maintained for an unreasonable amount of time, not to mention another expense for the tax system; for those that don’t, they become another thing to buy, and the rules at some schools make them rather expensive for struggling families. What they actually do is deny children any chance to express individuality or free thinking. They are yet another way to restrict and control young people, and ensure they do not behave outside the mandated terms. You get a bunch of kids, dress them the same, feed them the same, teach them the same, and soon you have a bunch of people who act, talk, and think the same.
Because it stops this black-led obsession with stupidly oversized tracksuits and training shoes which are impossible to run in: the price of which is more important to these children, than the quality, so uniforms, by the very nature of the word, creates a level playing field. Most British schools which have a uniform have a tie as part of the school uniform. I went to one of the few tie-less schools, thus inspiring my lifelong dislike of ties. Throwing on the same outfit for eleven years doesn’t teach anything, it actually denies kids the ability to learn how to pick out appropriate outfits for a professional setting.
The state school my children are currently attending and the girls school again a state school my daughter is due to start at this September both have uniforms. There are a couple of branded items a cardigan and a sweatshirt but everything else can be purchased from a wide range of shops including the supermarkets. The only item I really have issue with is the use of white polo shirts for primary school children. All but the branded items can be bought cheaply and there is a large volume of second hand clothes at that age they generally grow out of things faster than they wear them out. One of the new state schools that has just opened also has a uniform. However, everything other than socks is branded, if not with a logo, then with a specific colour of trim or seam. This means you can only buy the uniform from one shop and there is little in the way of second hand clothes it is a new school. The uniform bill, while not containing anything particularly unusual, just branded clothes, is well beyond many of the local residents.
