Throughout history, the number of stars on the flag has changed. When each state joins the United States, another star has been added. On July 4, 1960, Hawaii was the last star to complete the flag we know today. Each star is chosen to represent each US state. Some argue that the pentagram has been chosen to separate the United States from Europe. Another theory is that Betsy Ross came up with a pentagram because it was easier to make than a six-pointed star. No one knows for sure, but the pentagram is the only decision that allows our flag to be much more special for Americans.
