My parents grew up on jazz, classical music, and easy listening. When I turned 13, I got my first AC/DC cassette. They didn’t get it. “There’s no melody,” my mom criticized. Then came Judas Priest. “He’s screaming! He’s not singing!” Slayer. “I’m worried about what you’re listening to these days. There’s a lot of talk about the devil in the music you like.” My mom tolerated the band shirts but my parents drew the line at long hair. Kids who liked heavy metal were school drop outs who smoked, drank alcohol, did drugs, and had frivolous sex before even leaving junior high. My grades were good. I did none of the things that “those” kids did (the sex might have been nice though). But my parents didn’t want me to look like those others or people would look at me as an unfavourable type.

Non-initiates just find it too angry, too noisy, too loud, and unmelodious. Honestly, I myself wasn’t interested in extreme metal for many years. Death vocals just sounded like demons getting sick in the toilet to me. But now I quite enjoy it because I can recognize the skill required to vocalize that way. I’m not an angry person. I don’t worship Satan or fantasize about mutilating corpses. I don’t hang out in cemeteries or caress skulls. I just found that I can enjoy the sounds, the skill, and the music. I was about 27 years old. Invited by a buddy to go jam with him and some of his friends. I was a blues guy and loved classic rock.
