I’ve worked with a mid range and a top quality brand. The research is way, way better with the high quality brand. The high quality brand also has more resources and their bosses are more willing to invest in experimental projects and ideas. Equally they had way more people working on things like sourcing the fabrics, despite about the same amount of models. I don’t think this clear superiority would make a difference to 80% of consumers. But for those who really like very specific features and performance these small differences can have a lot of value. Dirt cheap jackets tend to be made of lesser quality materials. This is the biggest difference. Take the Apricoat as a good example. They use the same zippers as I tend to see on counterfeit jackets. These look water resistant but they are not and they break down quickly. The seams are made of inferior threading, and the seam sealing uses glues. This makes the jacket move stiffly, and reduces breath ability. The waterproofing is less environmentally friendly, and less effective. And then there is the insulation which is heavy for the amount of warmth plus it will degrade faster. For many users this will still be ideal. It will get them through at least a couple winters, and maybe a hike or two.
But for those who are more active, who perhaps push their gear a little harder skiing, or hiking more durability and performance may be required. The Arc’teryx Camosun could be compared to the Apricoat in many ways. It’s not overburdened with pockets that look appealing in a brochure, but are wasteful in reality. It requires special materials, and special tools to cut the particular fabrics. Being Gore these all require seam sealing which is done to a much higher standard. Being down insulation and Goretex membrane it is extremely challenging to stitch together. Down for example has to be handled in a special enclosed room because it is hazardous to health to be left blowing around. It’s too easily inhaled. For some people they will barely be able to notice the difference. Sure the Camosun is warmer, but is that worth the additional $400? Possibly not. But for others the clean look, the quality of manufacturing and the guarantee of way more years of use is worth it.
