Steps from the hotel awnings are Never on Sunday (good for a late slice of pizza, one staffer reports) and Spirits of Mt. Vernon, where you can toast al fresco, brush up on the Baltimore Beat, and bring a dog (Ulysses welcomes them). Stroll for five minutes to the Walters Museum of Art or Bottle of Bread for vintage labels and tapered candles. Lane Harlan and Matthew Pierce of Clavel, the popular 23rd street spot for tacos and mezcal, will soon lend their expertise to Ulysses via The Coral Wig, a tropical bar slated to open in its alley next year. Until then, even the city’s light rail from the airport offers a friendly thrill—when I ask the conductor how to pay for my $2 trip seconds before departure, she escorts me aboard for a free ride and checks twice to make sure I know the right stop (it’s Centre Street).

“It says 25 years old in the Constitution, ma’am,” Frost replied. “And then she smiled and she said, ‘It sounds like you’re just on time, then.’” An undersung American city, a heavily-veneered café, an escape from réalité. At Baltimore’s new Hotel Ulysses, with its seductively low lighting and mirrored drinking parlor, there’s a sense that you’re arriving at Mount Vernon’s hottest club as the concierge hands over a blue key card. But don’t let the handmade quilts and duster-covered TVs fool you into thinking it will be a snoozy stay—beneath the leopard carpet lies the potential to really party. It was there at Saturday’s grand opening, where models Paloma Elsesser, Jari Jones, and Richie Shazam danced and glided around the opulent Bloom’s cocktail lounge—alongside a who’s who of Baltimoreans including artists Abdu Ali (creator of the curatorial platform as they lay), Becca Morrin (whose production design graced Sharon Van Etten’s latest “Headspace” music video) and Rosemary Liss (Le Comptoir du Vin’s restaurateur). There were rumors of two-hour lines wrapping around the block outside, and true of any iconic nightclub, the staff is as much a part of the scene as the patrons. Ulysses was imagined as a sort of “embassy where travelers can meet locals, where the best of visitors can meet the best of Baltimore,” according to Ari S. Heckman, who co-founded the cult hotel chain Ash in 2008 alongside Jonathan Minkoff, before the New York-based hotelier became a trio with Will Cooper as CCO in 2011. Ulysses joins its sister properties in Providence, New Orleans, and Detroit; all with interiors inspired by the team’s travels, and an ethos that beauty moves culture forward—even in the most eccentric spaces. “Baltimore contains multitudes, and Mount Vernon is highly walkable with an experimental energy,” Heckman says of their fourth boutique hotel location. The nine-story historic building Ulysses resides within was constructed in 1912 on a site formerly home to Mayor Latrobe—over 100 years later, the neighborhood still buzzes with personality.Photo: Brett Wood

Frost hopes to help create better conditions for the most vulnerable, like his late grandmother. But, as a congressman, he doesn’t intend to spout platitudes or make sweeping promises. He wants to be honest. “I think part of the reason why half of our country doesn’t vote is because, for generations, they’ve been lied to by politicians who have said, ‘Vote for me, and this is what you’ll get,’ ” Frost says. “I’m one of 435 members and I get one vote. I can’t promise that a bill will pass, but what I can promise is what I believe in, and how hard I’m gonna fight for it.” And as for those who insist he’s too young to lead? Frost remembers an exchange with an elder woman voter as he campaigned in Florida. Sizing Frost up, she asked: “How old do you have to be to run for Congress, boy?”
